Blue 6-Layer Gooseberry Chevron Beads – Antique Venetian Strand

Blue 6-Layer Gooseberry Chevron Beads – Antique Venetian Strand

This is a rare and beautiful strand of 6-layer Blue Venetian glass trade beads, often referred to by collectors as "Gooseberry" Chevron beads. These unmolded, drawn glass beads feature rich cobalt and white layers that subtly shimmer beneath the surface-each one a miniature piece of Venetian art.

This exact style is documented in Picard, Volume VII, p.61, strand 2, highlighting its recognized place in the history of trade beads.

  • Length of Strand: 26 inches (66 cm)
  • Bead Size: 6–8 mm in diameter
  • Condition: Very good antique condition
  • Note: Some beads show chipping consistent with age and historical use

These 6-layer Gooseberry Chevrons were used extensively in the early 1900s African trade networks, valued for their soft glow and sophisticated construction. Unlike typical Chevrons with sharp ground edges, these unmolded beads have a more organic, rounded finish-adding to their uniqueness and charm.

💎 History, Value & Craftsmanship

Venetian Chevron beads are among the most iconic trade beads in global history. Originating from Murano, Italy, in the late 15th century, they are created through the drawn glass technique-layering colored glass into canes, stretching them, and slicing them to reveal intricate interior star patterns. The "Gooseberry" variety is notable for its subtle layering and was often left unground, resulting in a softer, more natural bead form. These beads became essential in African trade, serving not just as adornments but also as currency and cultural markers.

Authentic antique Venetian Gooseberry beads are highly sought after by collectors for their rarity, elegance, and historical significance.
